Kauai West Coast Swing (December 29, 2011)

Coming to Kauai for three weeks, I expected to have three weeks without the joy of social dancing. Fortunately, I was terribly mistaken! There’s actually quite a bit of dancing on the island – Sunday nights at the Koloa Neighborhood Center (5 minutes from where I’m staying), and Tuesday and Thursday nights at Rob’s Good Time Grill in Lihue. (Check out the Koloa Dance website for all the information.)

After going to a Sunday dance and three Tuesday/Thursdays, the lovely dancers of Kauai were kind enough to let me DJ for a night at Rob’s Good Time Grill. (Thanks Kauai dancers!)

Here’s a list of the songs I played.

Bay Area folks will notice that my Kauai set list is quite different from my set lists at home – instead of mostly Waltz and almost no West Coast Swing, they do mostly West Coast Swing and almost no Waltz. They also do some dances that we don’t do: “Country Two Step” is a fast, follow-backing SSQQ foxtrot to country music (Richard spends five minutes on it in Social II). “Sweetheart Schottische” is different from our Schottische – it’s a group dance done with a partner in a circle (see this video). “Cowboy Cha Cha” is a couples’ four-wall line dance (see this video – on Kauai they do it a little bit differently, with optional variations, but you get the idea). They also do some rumba and samba sometimes, and there’s a group that focuses on the latin dances. As you’ll see below, I taught them the Night Fever dance (they used the song for Hustle, but didn’t know the Travolta dance) – we even did the accelerating version!
